Internet Security Tools : AntiVirus Anti Virus
Firewalls can keep uninvited guests out of your system, but every time you view a web page, collect email or carry out some
other internet activity, you are inviting possibly unwanted guests to exploit your machine in some way.
These days, Anti Virus programs are a vital part of any system. Many new computers come with a virus checker built in as part of
the bundled software, these often need a subscription to be paid for in order to continue updating via the internet.
New viruses are found every week, in order to use the internet (and exchange disks and data with others) with confidence, it
is important to know a) that you have a virus checker, and b) how often it updates and that it is actualy updating its Virus
Definitions on a regular basis.
Anti Virus programs all have some means of indicating how recent the definitions are - if the ones on your system are more than a
couple of weeks old, you should check to see how to get them to update more frequently. (Better Anti Virus programs now look for updates
on a daily basis!)
For machines that have no Anti Virus programs - or if the one installed is not updating or making it clear that updates are being done,
AVG Antivirus is an Antivirus program that works well most versions
of Windows, updates frequently and is priced competetively (subscriptions last 2 years rather than the more usual 1 year).
For personal users, there is a Free Version here.
