Firewalls

Users most at risk are those that connect directly to the internet via a dialup or broadband modem. This is because the connection is terminated at their computer and if there is a security weakness or flaw, a hacker or (more likely) hacked system, that can beat that weakness will be rewarded with access to the computer.

In order to prevent un-invited guests on a directly connected machine (via dialup or broadband modem), a software firewall is required. Windows XP users can turn on the Windows firewall - if the system is Service pack 2 or greater, then the operating system will have asked that it be turned on - before Service Pack 2, the user had to know that this was a necessary option.

Users of earlier windows versions, or non windows users will need to investigate an alternative firewall option.

Windows users should look at products such as Zone Alarm from Zonelabs. Several versions are available including a basic version that is free for personal use.

Broadband users can also choose to connect via a Router instead of a modem, this is a small computer unit that only handles network interface and routing functions - If one of these gets hacked, there is less for a hacker to work with.

By their nature, routers (when configured with a basic broadband connection) share a connection between several machines on a network. From the outside, it is difficult to address a particular machine on the inside. Routers may also include additional firewall functions - such as the ability to limit access to certain destinations or internet functions.

Even if you connect your machines via a Router, it is still a good idea to turn on each computer's software fire wall, in the event that one of your computers gets infected with a virus or spyware, having software firewalls turned on will limit the damage to other computers on the network. Also, as software firewalls often examine the programs attempting to access the internet, reporting new programs as they start, they provide an early indication of something going wrong.
