Free to Use and GPL Software
There are plenty of Free to Use and GPL software packages available on the internet.
Here are some that we find useful.
General
Adobe Home of the Adobe Acrobat tools and the free Adobe Reader software.
Many documents and manuals available on the web are in Adobe format.
Gimp GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program.
It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching.
Open Office Wordprocessor, Spreadsheet and Presentation software. Reads and Writes
documents from that other 'Office' package! Available as a free download.(broadband recommended, dialup users should check
the computer journals for recent versions on cover cds.
Internet
Mozilla Home of the Free and popular Firefox Web Browser and Thunderbird Email Manager.
Opera A full-featured Internet power tool. It includes pop-up blocking,
tabbed browsing, integrated searches, E-mail, RSS Newsfeeds and IRC chat.
Utility
7-Zip 7-Zip is a file archiver with high compression ratio.
It handles Zip and other popular archive formats.
SyncBack Freeware is a freeware version for the commercial
SyncBack package. It will allow you to select drives and folders that need backing up and then have them compressed and backed
up to another location on your PC, another drive on the network, a CD or memory key, even am FTP site somewhere on the net.
According to the website, the commercial version will backup files - even if they are open, the freeware version will require
any files are closed before a backup is run.
